🇱🇻 Why Riga Surprised Me: 5 Things I Didn’t Expect About Latvia’s Capital

I didn’t exactly plan to visit Riga. I ended up there because my airline was contracted by AirBaltic for a short-term assignment. I was based in Latvia for two weeks, flying to all European routes and adjusting to a whole new crew and culture. Between flights, I had just enough time to explore the city, and honestly? Riga completely surprised me.

Whether you’re a fellow flight crew member or just curious about lesser-known European gems, here are 5 things that caught me off guard about Riga, Latvia.

1. The Architecture Felt Like a Real-Life Storybook

I had no idea Riga was this beautiful. The Art Nouveau district totally blew me away. Think elegant facades, dreamy pastels, and ornate balconies that make you stop in your tracks. The city also has a perfectly preserved Old Town that feels like you’ve stepped back in time.

2. It Was So Affordable (Even on a Crew Budget)

When you're working overseas, especially as crew, you’re always aware of costs, and Riga made it easy. Coffee for €2.50, delicious Latvian meals for €8–10, and cute boutique hotels or Airbnbs that don’t break the bank. It was refreshing compared to other European capitals I’ve visited.

✈️ Flight crew tip: Definitely a good city to stretch your per diem and still eat well!

3. It Was Easy to Navigate Solo

Since I had off days in between flights, I explored a lot on my own, and I never felt lost or unsafe. The city is compact, super walkable, and peaceful. Google Maps and a good pair of sneakers were all I needed.

4. Riga’s Central Market Was Next-Level

One of my favorite finds was Riga Central Market, built inside old Zeppelin hangars. It's lively, local, and full of fresh produce, meats, fish, flowers, you name it. I loved browsing the stalls and picking up snacks for the hotel. → I take you through it in the vlog; it’s worth a visit even if you’re short on time.

5. The Whole City Had a Calm, Friendly Energy

This is harder to describe, but Riga had a vibe I didn’t expect: calm, grounded, and welcoming. The people were kind, the pace was relaxed, and there was a quiet charm to everyday life. As someone who lives a pretty fast-paced, nomadic lifestyle, it felt like a breath of fresh air.

Would I Go Back? 100% Yes.

Even though I came to Riga for work, it turned into one of those places that leaves a mark. If you ever get the chance, on a layover, assignment, or just by chance: go. It’s totally underrated.
